MEET JULY'S ARTIST DISCOVERY: COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS

We are so excited to offer our vinyl subscription members signed copies of Nashville singer/songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews’ newest album Old Flowers as our July 2020 Artist Discovery pick.

Courtney Marie has shared the stage with John Prine, Brandi Carlile, The Head and the Heart, Shakey Graves, Tyler Childers, and more, and she earned a nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Association Honors & Awards in 2018.

She says of Old Flowers:

Old Flowers is about heartbreak. There are a million records and songs about that, but I did not lie when writing these songs. This album is about loving and caring for the person you know you can’t be with. It’s about being afraid to be vulnerable after you’ve been hurt. It’s about a woman who is alone, but okay with that, if it means truth. This was my truth this year—my nine-year relationship ended and I’m a woman alone in the world, but happy to know herself.”

Q & A

What was the first album you ever owned on vinyl?

The first vinyl I ever owned was Nico-Chelsea Girl. I went through a huge Velvet Underground phase in high school.

What have you been listening to lately?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Hawaiian slack key guitar, fado singers, and Billie Holiday. I’m finally starting to really dive deep into old jazz, too.

Where is your favorite place in the world and why?

I have so many favorite places, but a place I always go back to is Bisbee, Arizona. It’s a little town ten miles north of the Mexican border. It’s like nowhere in the world; a town full of artists and eccentrics built into the side of a canyon.

What are some things you have to have on the road with you?

I always travel with a nylon acoustic for the green room, sage to burn when the van gets smelly, a notebook, and chapstick.

What album do you play on repeat, and what do you love about it?

I could listen to Neil Young- Harvest Moon over and over. It feels like home. There’s something so sweet and comforting about the songs and Neil’s view of his own world at that time that feels very in line with my own thoughts
