MEET SEPTEMBER'S ARTIST DISCOVERY: BRENT COBB

Introduction

Meet Georgia-born country singer/songwriter Brent Cobb, our September 2020 Artist Discovery pick! His new album Keep ‘Em On They Toes is his fourth studio record, and is a reflection of his view of the world.

“My last couple of albums have been about people and places, and I wanted this album to be about thoughts and feelings,” he says. “I think it’s pretty easy to look around and see what’s going on in the world. With my heroes and the people that I listen to, it seems like the natural progression for me.”

Our monthly vinyl members can add a copy of the album on Patina Rust vinyl onto their box for just $20. Have you still not joined the vinyl subscription? Don’t wait any longer!

We asked Brent a few questions about the music he’s listening to now, his musical upbringing, his dream collaboration, and more. Read on to get to know him better!

Q & A

What was the first album you ever owned on vinyl?

When I was a kid my sister and I would spend a lot of weekends at our Nana’s (my mamas mama) while my dad and mama were playing/working gigs. She had a huge old record player. Her vinyl stock was all christmas Records. We’d listen to christmas music all year long. Our favorite was Bing Crosby’s Merry Christmas. I loved it so much that she gifted it to me later in life. Still have it.

What have you been listening to lately?

Those Jerry Lee Lewis country albums from ‘69 – ‘79 are hard to beat. Can’t nobody deliver like the killer.

Where is your favorite place in the world and why?

Home. I’m a homebody. I love being with my kids. We live at the end of a little slough off of a lake and spend a lot of time fishing and grilling.

What is the best live show you’ve seen, and why was it the best?

Recently, Charley Crockett at The Music Fest in Steamboat Springs, CO. In the past, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers with Crosby, Stills, and Nash at Bridgestone in Nashville. I think it was in 2012. At that show my wife noticed the suds at the bottom of her first cup of beer had formed a halloween-like smiley face. Tom Petty even made the beers smile.

What are some things you have to have on the road with you?

Chips and Salsa, my guitar. I’d give a bigger list but we don’t have any more room between the band and the gear.

What is the craziest thing that’s happened to you on the road?

Driving through a snowstorm in Illinois. Semis turned over every couple miles on both sides of the road because of black ice. We made it to our destination somehow.

Who or what influences your music?

Everything and everybody. The art in the simple stuff. I’ve always been attracted to poetry or song lyrics that said the most with the fewest amount of words.

What album do you play on repeat, and what do you love about it?

The Sound in Your Mind by Willie Nelson. The poetry and conversational tone make for and easy and inspiring listen.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Dolly Parton. She’s the boss. Always has been.
