Magnolia Record Club’s Record of the Month in February was Brandi Carlile’s By The Way, I Forgive You.

From the curator, Drew…
Brandi Carlile is an American treasure. I first heard her 12 or 13 years ago when I was scrolling through the show schedule on the website for the Workplay Theatre in Birmingham. She was touring her debut album and I immediately fell in love with her music. She has a timeless voice and a timeless sense of narrative songwriting that is intensely personal and also completely universal. She has spent the last 15 years making some of the most beloved music of our generation.
Brandi and her band, twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth, are incredible people. I have seen them live probably close to 10 times, played Blackjack with her on the Rock Boat, and had numerous lovely conversations with them. Their new album, By The Way, I Forgive You comes on the heels of Brandi and the band celebrating the 10 year release of her breakthrough album The Story, and in many ways this album feels like a sequel. There are two songs especially that feel that way: “The Joke” and “The Mother”. Bold, vulnerable songs that showcase the magnitude of her range and emotive capacities as a singer. I think you will love this album. I know I do.
