MEET OCTOBER'S ARTIST DISCOVERY: BIRDTALKER

Introduction

Birdtalker was started in 2012 by couple Dani and Zack Green, when they began writing songs together, which led to the official debut of the band in 2015. The current lineup includes Brian Seligman on guitars, Jesse Baker on bass, and Chris Wilson on drums.

Our monthly vinyl club members can add a copy of their new self-titled album on burnt orange vinyl onto their box for just $20. Have you still not joined the vinyl subscription? Don’t wait any longer!

Co-founder Zack answered a few questions about the music he’s listening to now, his musical upbringing, his dream collaboration, and more. Read on to get to know him better!

Q & A

What was the first album you ever owned on vinyl?

Dawes – Stories Don’t End

What have you been listening to lately?

Rufus Wainwright!

Where is your favorite place in the world and why?

My couch or Kauai. Both offer supreme relaxation and inspiration.

What is the best live show you’ve seen, and why was it the best?

The Givers opened for Dr. Dog in Asheville at the Orange Peel a handful of years ago. That year I had worn out both of their new records (In Light, and B-Room), and they played the hell out of them live. The sound, performances, company, and energy of the attendees was magic. A very present and delicious experience.

What are some things you have to have on the road with you?

Noise cancelling headphones, new un-listened-to records, a playlist of podcasts, a book, journal, wet wipes, and my water bottle.

What is the craziest thing that’s happened to you on the road?

In Denver on our 2018 tour, our Airbnb caught a handful of 9mm bullets, missing where Jesse (our bassist) would have been sleeping by a couple feet. Police came and took our report, it was a whole thing. He was the victim of a victimless crime.

Who or what influences your music?

Any input through the senses! There is richness in any dissonance or resonance.

What album do you play on repeat, and what do you love about it?

I like to listen to ‘Ma’ by Devendra Barnhardt because my body will not not move to it. I also think his gentle vocal delivery is really beautiful and fun.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Paul McCartney or Jacob Collier. I perceive both of them to be transcendently free in the music realm – I would love some of their childlike curiosity and fearlessness to rub off on me.
