Magnolia Record Club’s 2020 Exclusive Collection

2020 was…interesting.

The world faced a lot this year, and it’s not over yet. But luckily, there was a ton of music released this year to help us all get through. Here’s a look back at our 2020 Records of the Month!

January

The Lone Bellow

Half Moon Light

The first record of 2020 was the newest by folk-rock trio The Lone Bellow on smoky swirl vinyl. Our members got their powerhouse vocals, passionate performances, and intricate harmonies on song after song on Half Moon Light, a record about seeing a light through the dark times and keeping your sense of wonder as you grow.

February

Nathaniel Rateliff

And It’s Still Alright

February 2020 brought our members the first solo album in nearly seven years by Nathaniel Rateliff – And It’s Still Alright.

Inspired partly by the end of a relationship and the death of friend and Night Sweats collaborator Richard Swift, the songs on And It’s Still Alright passionately and urgently speak to finding hope through dark times and staying strong through struggle, all in Rateliff’s trademark soulful voice.

March

Rayland Baxter

Magnolia Presents: Rayland Baxter

March’s Record of the Month was an incredibly special piece, and our first compilation of 2020! We featured singer/songwriter Rayland Baxter’s Soho EP for the first time on vinyl alongside five unreleased tracks called Thunder Demos.

Included in this exclusive double-EP are stripped-down versions of some of his best-known songs such as “Yellow Eyes,” “Mr. Rodriguez,” and more, and also includes a cover of My Morning Jacket’s “Bermuda Highway.”

April

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit

Reunions

April 2020’s Record of the Month was the newest record from renowned and revered singer/songwriter Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit.

Isbell is a four-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist and is widely renowned as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. Garnering immense critical acclaim throughout his career, NPR Music calls him, “one of the finest singer-songwriters working at the intersection of folk, country and rock today,” and continues, “his songs have an exquisite, rawboned realism and deeply embedded class-consciousness.”

May

Mt. Joy

Rearrange Us

May 2020’s Record of the Month was the sophomore album by rock band Mt. Joy!

We’re thrilled that we got to offer our members this incredible album. Following up the enormous success Mt. Joy’s self-titled debut enjoyed, including a #1 single at Triple A radio, they hit the road with the likes of The Lumineers, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and many more artists.

Along the way, they wrote the songs for Rearrange Us, a sonically rich and adventurous album that really shows the growth this band has experienced through their career thus far, with sophisticated arrangements and instrumentation, as well as their trademark honest songwriting and highly sing-able hooks.

June

Phoebe Bridgers

Punisher

June 2020’s Record of the Month was Punisher, the new album by critically-acclaimed folk-rock singer songwriter Phoebe Bridgers.

Bridgers’ lyricism and honest songwriting is second to none, and her ability to express complex emotions through her music is inspiring. We offered the debut LP of her project with Conor Oberst, Better Oblivion Community Center, through the club in 2019, and it was so exciting for us to be able to offer more of her amazing music. This record is topping Best of 2020 lists all over the place, so it’s definitely not one to miss.

JULY

Kathleen Edwards

Total Freedom

The Canadian singer-songwriter enjoyed global success and inspired a whole generation of Americana artists before that was even a term. Could there be a Brandi Carlile or a Margo Price or a Jason Isbell without a Kathleen Edwards? We’re not sure.

We welcome Kathleen Edwards back with this exclusive vinyl pressing for our club members.

AUGUST

NEEDTOBREATHE

Out of Body

Out of Body is South Carolina rock band NEEDTOBREATHE’s seventh studio record, but their first in their new phase as a trio, as they said goodbye to fellow member Bo Reinhart in 2019. It’s a record that was made through reimagining their origins as a band, creating a “team atmosphere,” and the band “fell in love with [their] instruments again” during the writing and recording process.

What results is a sweeping, rich record full of passionate performances and soulful songs, both stadium-sized and intimate. We’ve featured the band before and were so excited to get to be a part of their newest album’s release.

SEPTEMBER

My Morning Jacket

The Waterfall II

In 2014, My Morning Jacket recorded over two dozen songs for a double album, releasing The Waterfall in 2015. Now, the second half of the project has come to fruition in The Waterfall II.

“What fused this record is, I feel like it’s a weird turning point for the universe. I feel like so many people I know are getting divorced or having kids. There’s so much change going on and I feel like, for me, that one chapter has ended. And if you’re looking at a book, there’s a hand flipping the page up and it’s in between the chapter you just finished and the one that’s getting ready to start. That’s kind of the sound of this record, and my life, the sound of the page turning and not being sure what’s coming next.” – Jim James

OCTOBER

Darlingside

Fish Pond Fish

October 2020’s Record of the Month was the newest album from Darlingside, Fish Pond Fish, on exclusive clear pink vinyl with gold flecks! It’s gorgeous and a perfect ray of light to counter the change of the seasons.

Darlingside recently celebrated their 10-year anniversary as a band, and their music has been described by NPR as “exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop.” The New Yorker also compared them to David Crosby and The Byrds. You’ll love this record, its lush harmonies and dense arrangements.
